The Old Bowery Theater

Audiences at the Old Bowery Theater on the Bowery were notoriously boisterous. The clientele here and at other Bowery venues had a far different profile than that which frequented the upscale Broadway theaters; immigrants, the working poor, prostitutes and the like all came to such places primarily for amusement, rather than “culture.” The subbasement rehearsal halls in the Old Bowery in the novel are imaginary.
