James H. Noe was a real historical figure whose murder by the real-life Whyo Dandy Johnny Dolan is documented in Herbert Asbury’s Gang’s of New York. Johnny Dolan was hanged for the crime in 1876. Mr. Noe’s life in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, is entirely imagined.
